Mark Garrity Named 2016 Community Service Award Winner
Mark Garrity, the Anne Arundel County Parks Administrator with the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, is the winner of the 2016 Chuck Slaughter Community Service Award. Mark has been instrumental in working with BBSC on some of its most important projects, including the new grass infield on Arnold Park, Field 4, as well as the official naming of Arnold Park Field 4 as Chuck Slaughter Memorial Field. Mark is also a former BBSC coach.
BBSC would also like to thank County Executive Steven R. Schuh and Rick Anthony, director of Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks, for their support on these projects.
The Chuck Slaughter Community Service Award each year honors those who have been leaders in Broadneck area youth sports and particularly in creating a healthy environment and enjoyable experience for BBSC players and families. The award is named after Chuck Slaughter, who prior to his untimely death was one of the biggest supporters and best friends of the BBSC Community.
Prior Winners of the Chuck Slaughter Community Service Award:
2015: Jeff Mahler
2014: Chuck Slaughter
2013: Steve Barnes
2012: Chris Nemarich
2011: The BBSC Community for its Selfless Work in a Time of Crisis
BBSC is proud to announce that we have installed a high-school like grass infield at the 90-foot field at Arnold Park Field 4, better known as Chuck Slaughter Memorial Field. The project cost almost $30,000, with BBSC and the Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Department splitting the cost. The county supplied the sod and also put in water lines so the field could be watered. BBSC hired a field consultant, paid for all the physical work and for the top soil needed for the fields and worked the field after the sod was set down. We look forward to seeing our Babe Ruth, Colt and travel teams playing on the field next spring. We specifically would like to thank County Executive Steve Schuh; Director of Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks, Rick Anthony; and Parks Administrator Mark Garrity for their help with this project.
BBSC Mission Statement
The Broadneck Baseball and Softball Club is comprised of the families of more than 600 children playing organized youth baseball and softball on the Broadneck Peninsula. We are affiliated with the Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth organizations in baseball and with the Pony organization in softball.
Our goal at BBSC is to provide an opportunity for Broadneck-area children of all levels of ability and interest to play softball and baseball in a safe environment, emphasizing sportsmanship and fair play. Most importantly, we simply want to make softball and baseball a fun and memorable experience for all. We believe that coaches and parents attending games and practices should be role models for our child athletes and should always conduct themselves in a way that exhibits sportsmanship and admirable conduct toward other players, coaches, umpires and parents. We believe in teaching the sports of baseball and softball and have a major focus on teaching fundamentals in a way that makes the sport fun. We believe that BBSC is an important part of the local Broadneck community and we strive to bring the community together in positive ways. We honor local volunteers and businesses through our annual BBSC Community Service Award and we recognize those players who exhibit outstanding sportsmanship no matter what their batting average or whether their teams place first or last. We firmly believe that childhood is a magical time of life and that coaches and parents should never lose sight of the fact that our players are children playing a game that should always be fun.
